It is time for one of the most eagerly awaited annual sports extravaganza in the country again. The Khelo India Youth Games are back for their sixth edition. This time, the Games will be held across four cities in Tamil Nadu - Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore. (More Sports News)
The multi-sport event will commence on January 19 and conclude on January 31. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest for the opening ceremony, which will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
Squash will make its debut at the Khelo India Youth Games with this edition. The sport has a special connect with Chennai, with the Squash Rackets Federation of India setting up its flagship India Squash Academy in the southern city all the way way back in 1990. Several national and international stars train there, and now with the inclusion of squash in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics programme, it makes even more sense to include the sport.
"Khelo India Youth Games is not just about winning medals. It is about pushing your limits and bracing the spirit of fair play and forging friendships that will last a lifetime," Union sports minister Anurag Thakur had said at the official launch ceremony of the event.
He had added that more than 5,630 athletes are set to take part in the Games across 26 sports, along with a demo sport. A total of 278 competitive events are set to happen across 12 venues in Chennai, and one each in the remaining three cities.
