New Zealand expectedly won their second 2023 ODI World Cup match with ease in Hyderabad on Monday. Though Netherlands tried to mount a good fight, in the end, the gulf in skills and experience was too big to surmount, and with this, NZ made it two wins on the bounce in their World Cup campaign. One of the architects of NZ's 99-run victory on Monday was left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner's five-star performance. Santner's bowling figures of 5/59 not only broke the back of the Dutch batting order, it also broke several records along the way. Let's take a look at all the statistcal highlights from the NZ vs NED match. (Match Report | Highlights | Full Coverage)
Left-Arm Spinners With Fifers In World Cup
After Yuvraj Singh and Shakib Al Hasan, Mitchell Santner became only the third left-arm spinner to take a five-wicket haul in the history of the ODI Cricket World Cup. He achieved the feat with his 5/59 against Netherlands on Monday.
NZ Spinners With 2 ODI Fifers
Santner became only the second NZ spinner after Daniel Vettori to bag two five-wickets hauls in ODI cricket. Matthew Hart and Ish Sodhi are the only two other NZ spinners to have notched up fifers in the 50-over format.
Players With Fifer And 30-Plus Runs In Same World Cup Match
Santner also scored a handy unbeaten 36 on Monday, which not only gave his side the final flourish, but also made the bespectacled southpaw part of an elusive list of all-rounders. Santner is now only the fifth player ever to have achieved the double of a five-wicket haul and more than 30 runs in the same ODI World Cup game. He joins illustrious all-rounders like Kapil Dev, Andy Bichel, Yuvraj Singh and Shakib Al Hasan to have done the feat.
Best Bowling Figures By An NZ Bowler In India
With his match-winning spell, Santner notched up the second-best bowling figures by an NZ bowler on Indian soil. Only Matthew Hart, who returned figures of 5/22 against West Indies in Margao in 1994, has a better analysis. Santner and Hart are the only two NZ players to have bagged fifers in India in 50-over games.
Best Bowling Figures For NZ In World Cup
Santner's performance also made him part of the exclusive list of bowlers who have registered the best bowling figures for NZ in ODI World Cup matches. Santner is now sixth on that list, which is topped by Tim Southee. The right-arm swing bowler had come up with a devastating seven-wicket haul against England in Wellington in 2015, ending with magical figures of 7/33. The top five are speedsters, which makes Santner the first NZ spinner to take a fifer in an ODI World Cup game.
