Founded in 1934, the Ranji Trophy is racing rapidly towards its centenary version. Held by the Board of Control for Cricket in India yearly, the contest will enter its 89th edition in 2024, with the Covid-19-hit 2020-21 season the only blemish in its otherwise perfect record. In its current iteration, 38 teams participate in the tournament, 32 in the Elite Groups and the remaining six in the Plate Group. All 28 states of the Indian Union are represented on the Ranji roster at least once, with four of the eight Union Territories also joining the mix.
The tournament has held its current name since 1935, switching over from the Cricket Championship of India to pay tribute to the first international cricket player the nation had produced: Ranjitsinhji, who played for England from 1896 to 1902.
Mumbai (previously, Bombay) are the most successful team in Ranji Trophy history, winning the pan-India tournament 41 times, although the last time they touched the coveted trophy was back in 2015/16.
