The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced the latest list of players shortlisted for the ICC Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month awards for September. Talented young better Shubman Gill and fiery pacer Mohammed Siraj are the two Indians who feature in the shortlist. England opener Dawid Malan is the only other cricketer named in the three-player men's shortlist, while the women's shortlist comprises Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu and South Africa’s Nadine de Klerk and Laura Wolvaardt. Siraj climbed to the top of the ICC Men’s ODI rankings for bowlers in late September and was the wrecker-in-chief against Sri Lanka in the final of the 2023 Asia Cup, with a remarkable exhibition of seam bowling that included taking five wickets in 16 deliveries. Gill, on the other hand, will be hoping to win his second Player of the Month award after his red-hot form in the Asia Cup continued into the following ODI series against Australia.
Malan was nominated after his stellar display in the limited-overs series against New Zealand. He celebrated the nomination with a swashbuckling century against Bangaldesh in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Dharamsala.
Athapaththu secured her second Player of the Month nomination after her contributions with bat as well as ball took Sri Lanka to their first-ever series victory on English soil. South Africa's de Klerk and Wolvaardt’s did really well in the ODI and T20 series against Pakistan and New Zealand, which earned them the other nominations in the contest.
