In a 16 team-competition featuring four groups of four teams each, there was bound to be one with three relatively strong teams in it. At the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2024, Group B is that 'group of death'. (More Cricket News)
England, West Indies and South Africa are the aforementioned three strong teams, and Scotland are the fourth. Though none of the three would want to take Owen Gould's team lightly, they know that the fight for the Super Six spots is between them. While England are more or less through to the next stage, it is West Indies and South Africa who are in the tussle.
While the Caribbean side were taking on group toppers England at the time of writing, South Africa are set to face Scotland for their third and final preliminary round match. The Proteas side, which is being led by Juan James after David Teeger was removed from captaincy in the run-up to the tournament, have a win and a loss from their two games.
While South Africa beat the Windies by 31 runs in their campaign opener, they lost to England by 36 runs (DLS method) in a rain-interrupted game thereafter to undo the early gains somewhat. They now need to beat Scotland to stand a chance of qualifying.
As for Scotland, the World Cup offers the opportunity to face the best in the business and they will relish the opportunity once again, against the Proteas.
