As the world fight to contain the deadly COVID-19, almost all sporting events have been postponed or cancelled. On Tuesday (March 24), the Tokyo Olympic Games were postponed, thus becoming the biggest sporting event to face the brunt of COVID-19. The outbreak has so far claimed more than 20,000 lives.
In India, fans were hoping against hope to see at least a curtailed Indian Premier League (IPL) edition. But with the Narendra Modi government imposing a 21-day countrywide lockdown, the 2020 edition of the cash-rich T20 cricket league is as good as cancelled. The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) had earlier postponed it to April 15.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, expressing helplessness, had said: "I can't say anything at the moment. We are at the same place where we were on the day we postponed. Nothing has changed in the last 10 days. So, I don't have an answer to it. Status quo remains."
The pandemic has seen an unprecedented number of shutdowns including top leagues and tournaments like EPL, La Liga, Serie A, the NBA, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Euro 2020, Copa America 2020 and almost every bilateral cricket series has been suspended until at least April. The last time such a widespread shutdown witnessed was the during World War-II when all major sporting events, including the Olympics in 1940 and 1944, were cancelled.
