IN act of justice closes the book on a misdeed; while an act of vengeance writes one of its own. But more aptly, mystery is a resource like gold or coal. And its presentation is a fine art. Just a couple of philosophical thoughts which come to mind after reading former chief justice of the Indian Supreme Court Y.V. Chandrachud’s one-man report on the alleged allegations of betting and bribery heaped on the Indian cricketers. Not all who mattered, but only a chosen few were summoned by Chandrachud at the behest of the BCCI—some of the present lot against whom "no-smoke-without-fire" finger was directly aimed. A few ex-Test cricketers also appeared in some official capacity or the other and not far behind were a few pen-pushers who were expected to "kiss and tell"!

In the end, Chandrachud’s 94-page finding left more people disillusioned than satisfied. ‘Hogwash’ became an abrupt slogan. No, I am not casting aspersions. I am only suggesting that Chandrachud was given a dirty job to perform. And he performed it to the best of his ability by not stirring the proverbial hornet’s nest.
