The USA won the toss and opted to bat first. Captain Rishi Ramesh believed the pitch was good to bat on and they would defend the total against the Irish team. The first match of Group A will decide which team will gain the early points before they clash with India and Bangladesh in the later stages of the tournament.
Philippus le Roux, Ireland's captain, said that he wanted to give his bowlers an advantage, to exploit the fresh wicket early on. In the warm-ups, they lost to Zimbabwe and the game against Namibia was washed out. The USA also took on the two African sides before heading to the finals -- a no-result against Namibia then a defeat to Zimbabwe.
