Pitted against Sri Lanka in their opening match of the ICC U-29 Men's Cricket World Cup 2024, Zimbabwe got their campaign rolling with a disparaging loss. Despite being helped by a rain-drenched outfield, which significantly reduced the target for Prosper Utseya's boys, Zimbabwe failed to chase down the requisite 129 runs in 22 overs and ended up surrendering two points to a delighted Sri Lankan team. Australia, too, limited their first opponents, Namibia, to a low total, albeit they did so without the help of the weather. Restricting Namibia to 91 all-out in 33.1 overs, they completed a successful chase in 19.5 overs, with Huh Weibgen contributing crucial 39 runs to the total. While it may have looked like a straightforward victory, Australia did lose six wickets while in chase.
Both Zimbabwe and Australia remain in contention for a knockout spot at the time of writing, with the latter's chances of progression slightly better than the former. However, should Zimbabwe beat the mighty Aussies, they will move level with them on two points with a game against Namibia coming up next.
