Around 300 nurses have left Calcutta for Manipur after resigning from their jobs. Earlier, it was reported that 185 nurses have quit their jobs in Calcutta hospitals and returned to Imphal. Cristella, a nurse said: “We are not happy that we left our duties. There was a huge shortage of PPE kits. We also faced discrimination and racism. People sometimes spat on us. They questioned us everywhere we went.”

On May 23, Delhi Police arrested Nat­asha Narwal and Devangana Kalita of student group Pinjra Tod for participating in anti-CAA protests. They got bail, but were arrested again in a separate case and put in remand for two days, which was extended by two more days.

The Amphan cyclone has damaged the world’s largest banyan tree—one of the two ‘kalpvriksha’, also known as Indian olive—in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in Howrah. The circumference of the 342-year-old tree’s core stem once measured 15 metre and that of its peripheral stem is over 1.08 km. The core stem was removed in 1925. The Botanical Survey of India uses the picture of this tree as its logo. Banyan is India’s national tree.
