Good food and good alcohol equals a great time. This maybe a tried and tested formula, but it doesn’t hurt to give it another go. A lazy Saturday provided just the right opportunity as my friend and I march up to the newly-opened Beer Café in Khan Market. This place introduces a Spanish menu, with a host of food and drinks, that cater to our Mediterranean cravings.

We start our meals with the vegetarian Tapas and glasses of red and white wine. As we wait for our food, I take in the décor. The setting sun filters through the window pane intensifying the warm earthy tone. The pub further extends into a balcony that has been designated as a smoking zone. A rooftop seating area is currently in the works. Personally, I prefer the indoors. The wooden furniture with a splash of blue, the trademark yellow walls, the murals and the ornamental tiles create a very Mediterranean vibe.

But all these observations melt away when I see our food making its way to the table. The Tapas include Crostini topped roasted mushrooms and tomatoes with olives on a spicy pesto. They were served with Caprese Bites, marinated olives, pickled gherkins and fried chillies. The menu offered an extensive wine list, but we held off only to quench our thirst with beer.

From the tap, we sample and settle on pints of Hoegaarden and Edelweiss. We chug our beers and munch on Croquetas De Setas. A must try for vegetarians, this bread-crumbed roll is filled with cheese, mushrooms, jalapenos. Served with spicy Arrabbiata sauce, it was a perfect blend of flavours. The indulgent Gambas Al Agillo – prawns sizzled with garlic, chilli, olive oil and parsley – are brought next. The prawns were placed on slices of lemon, and were perfectly succulent.

Amid conversations that ranged from work to proposed shopping trips, we try the Coca-Catalan Flatbread.  As someone for whom cheese is an absolute guilty pleasure, I thought the flatbread would not suit my taste. I was wrong, of course. With roasted veggies, tomatoes and a dash of herbs, the Coca-Catalan Flatbread is an absolute delight. It is light and crunchy with exotic flavours. Their recently stocked Möller beer was a perfect accompaniment with our flatbread.

The Spanish menu is an excellent addition to an already extensive palate of flavours. If a relaxed rendezvous is on your mind, then the Beer Café is the place to be.
