The food
For authentic Cape Malay in the Bo-Kaap area, try the Noon Gun Tea Room and Restaurant (+27-214240529) or the more highly rated Biesmiellah (biesmiellah.co.za) or the Bo-Kaap Kombuis (bokaapkombuis.co.za) where old Cape Malay and Cape Dutch songs are sung on some nights.
For a more elaborate meal, try the Gold Restaurant (goldrestaurant.co.za), which does a fifteen-course tasting safari which includes Cape Malay and other African cuisine.
A gourmet Cape Malay experience is available at The Cape Malay Restaurant at The Cellars-Hohenort Constantia (cellars-hohenort.com/cape-malay), itself an owner-managed luxury boutique hotel. Reservations are required for this evening-only experience.
The iconic afternoon tea at the luxurious Mount Nelson Hotel (mountnelson.co.za) is a meal in itself.
Try Braai at the House of Meat (houseofmeat.aireview.co.za), which serves a meat buffet braai-ed on an open fire. Prices are in the mid range.
The drink
We went to a wine tasting at the Fairview Winery (fairview.co.za) in the Paarl area of the Western Cape. Our wine tasting cost included six wines and a selection of cheeses. But given the vast array of wine farms in Paarl and Stellenbosch, both an hour-plus drive from Cape Town, which one to choose? Take a wine tour from the listings at uncoverthecape.co.za/wine-farms/stellenbosch. Or try private personalised tours from Stellenbosch Wine Tours at stellenboschwinetours.co.za.
