Their cabin crew’s taxi-hued, colour-blocked, T-shirt-based uniforms caused quite a buzz. Their slogan came from an online contest. And last month, they had Michael Jackson singing ‘Beat it!’ — by way of a theme tune for their ‘You Decide the Fare!’ campaign, which invited us to recruit our friends to drive their fares down ($88 one-way from Singapore to Gold Coast or Sydney). Singapore Air’s kid sister Scoot sure seems a spunky kid — with an April birthday. But it also makes us wonder if she’s a prankster — she promised business-class passengers economy prices for their pitched leather seats, two meals and overnight comfort kits. What’s really smart is the stratification in coach class though — the basic Scoot fare, branded Fly(!), simply gets you a seat; choose FlyBag to bring 15kg of checked baggage; and pick FlyBagEat to get a hot meal too. The premium economy offering consists of S-t-r-e-t-ch seats — that’s four more inches of legroom. There’s more add-ons, if you like — rentable preloaded iPads, queue-free priority boarding… All these tall promises for a four-craft fleet connecting just three dots (Singapore, Sydney, Gold Coast, with probable future ’ports of call in China), and you bet we’ll be looking to see if Scoot measures up at flyscoot.com.
