Indian road signs — stern, wise and always funny (by design as well as by accident)—have a formidable fan base. But it takes the unwavering enthusiasm of someone like Ajay Jain to pay proper tribute to this subtle and unsung art. Jain drove over 10,000 kilometres on Indian roads to produce Peep Peep Don’t Sleep (Kunzum; Rs 350), a surreal compendium of some of the most outrageous road signage out there. It’s left us wondering, though — aren’t these bright, chirpy signs, surely meant to avert accidents, more than a bit distracting themselves? You see, we can’t keep our eyes on the road anymore.
