There has been no celibate monastic community amongst the Newars from at least the 16 century. Sometime around then, the Buddhists of the Kathmandu Valley were divided by the Hindu Malla kings into a 'caste' system. The Vajracharyas and the Sakyas undergo monastic initiation at a young age, guided by the basic framework of the Vajrayana. All of them take turns to care for the Kwapa Dyah, and there is always a young boy priest, the 'bapacha' who tends to the Buddha shrine. Here you see the 'bapacha' at Kwa Baha, at the main shrine of Sakyamuni Buddha.
