The beaches take up a large percentage of the ink spent on Goa’s attractions, but there’s another side to it — it’s the only state that has the entire stretch of the Western Ghats within its limits under protection. A relatively new reserve, the Mhadei (208 sq km) is a beautiful place with high-rising hills, streams, waterfalls and a delicious variety of forest types. It also has seven endemic bird species, and a solid list of fauna that includes tigers. To add a twist of the unexpected, Mhadei has an intriguing tradition of sacred groves.
