Netherlands: The Starry Night Bike Path

What’s better than a red carpet? A twinkling one, perhaps? To commemorate the life and work of painter Vincent van Gogh, Dutch artist and designer Daan Roosegaarde has created an illuminated bike path inspired by one of Van Gogh’s most famous works. The Starry Night Bike Path, in the city of Eindhoven, Netherlands, is a winding half-mile path illuminated by thousands of LED lights and special paint, and interprets the swirling shapes and colours of Van Gogh’s original painting. 50,000 glow-in-the-dark stones have been embedded in the ground, and they soak up the sun’s rays during the day, powering stunning patterns of glowing fragments by night. The current installation is part of the larger Van Gogh Cycle Route, free and open to the public year round. Do stop by for a unique experience. Van Gogh’s original Starry Night, which he painted in 1889 while in an asylum in Saint-Rémy, France, is on display in New York at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
