Dubai’s new tram network, inaugurated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, is the first network outside of Europe to be powered by ground-supplied electricity, which basically means there will be no overhead lines. The initial 10.6-km-long track connects the Dubai Marina to the Tram Depot near the Dubai Police Academy. It will have 17 stations and a fleet of 11 trams, and is expected to transport about 27,000 passengers a day. But those not travelling by the tram will have to watch out. The tram lines pass through at least 30 junctions, crossings and intersections. The government has urged citizens to learn and understand the new signage and markings that have been put on the entire stretch. Hefty penalties are in place for motorists who disobey traffic rules on roads shared with the tram. No pain, no gain y’all. www.alsufouhtram.com
