If you happen to be in the vicinity of Champakkulam, in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, you could be witness this week to the inaugural boat race that sets off a whole season of race frenzy in the state. Though the snake boat race of Ernakulam is the more famous one, popping by Champakkulam for this event (July 11, 2014) is definitely recommended, because aside from the boat race, the town also has one of the oldest churches in India, St Mary’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church, a beautiful structure.

The Champakkulam Moolam Vallam Kali (‘vallam kali’ means ‘boat race’) takes place on the river Pamba, in the Malayalam month of mithunam (roughly June/July). Watching the spectators is in itself an experience, as the most enthusiastic among them climb the trees for ‘balcony seats’. As the day reaches high noon, boats in various categories like the chundan (snake boat), veppu, iruttu kuthi, churulan and others from nearby regions assemble at the starting point. The snake boat, of course, is the most fascinating.
