Made of hundreds of beer cans, the boats race in the sea off Mindil Beach in Darwin, Australia. There is also a soft drink can boat race for juniors. Boat builders have to follow a few rules but otherwise are allowed to fashion a boat according to their imagination. Organised by the Combined Lions Club of Darwin, the regatta will be held on July 12, 2015. The first race was held in 1974, a brainchild of Paul Rice-Chapman and Lutz Frankenfeld, to clean the beach of litter. Another event that is a huge crowd-puller is the thong throwing competition. Besides watching the boats sink or float, you can enjoy the beach events, the food and craft stalls at the sunset market, etc. Entry by donation. The proceeds go for some charitable cause.
