IRCTC, in partnership with ICICI Lombard General Insurance, General Sundram and Shriram General, has come up with an optional travel insurance scheme for railway passengers. Starting from September 1, the facility will be introduced on a trial basis beginning with a premium of just Re1 while booking tickets from irctc.co.in. Except for suburban trains, the scheme will be available for all e-tickets regardless of the class booked. A compensation of Rs. 10,000 for transportation of mortal remains in the case of death or injury from a train accident or other ‘untoward incidents’ including terrorist attacks, robbery, rioting, shoot-out or arson, as well as for short termination, diverted route and Vikalp train, Rs. 7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, up to Rs. 2 lakh for hospital charges and up to Rs. 10 lakh in case of death or permanent disability will be offered to travellers and their families. Intimations for claims need to be filed not later than four months after the event. The claim will be processed and a cheque will be sent within 15 days of the receipt of document.
