The interiors are stunning—blinding, even, with character in spades. Call it colourful, or call it vintage kitsch—you’d be right either way. Patterned tiles on floors and ceilings, frescoes and ornate mirrors and art on the walls, stained-glass windows and jharokhas, Jaipur-blue blockprint dining room and red sandstone pillars guarding the pool, this is OTT Indian at its best. You couldn’t wish for a more full-on introduction to the Golden Triangle. There is a jacuzzi at the indoor poolside, and ayurvedic massages on request, as well as folk dances and puppet shows de rigeuer, a garden with swing seats and a terrace upstairs; although wifi is a bit spotty and staff a little deficient in their English. Rooms feel pretty plush for the price, but downstairs ones by the pool can be noisy. Tariff: Rs 3,999–4,799 for doubles Contact: 0141-2201333, www.hotelvimalheritage.com
