Convenient’ was our first thought, thanks to the complimentary airport transfer service that IHG’s family-friendly brand offers to guests, along with free wi-fi. ‘Convivial’ was our second, walking into a lobby full of cushy, chatty seating that flows easily into the Viva restaurant, the smoked-glass-cordoned pub-style Hangar bar and the planted-in-the-middle Viva Deli.
This is not a hushed space, conversation in many languages plink-plonk-plunking in from every direction. ‘Comfortable’ was the third impression, walking into a compact but stylish room that cleverly uses lighting, mirrors and off-the-floor furniture for an illusion of spaciousness. Triple-glazed windows make for an easy sleep. An iPod dock, mini-bar and ironing amenities were more than we had expected from our old acquaintance with the value brand in the 1980s.
The décor too was a surprise, the aesthetic choices ranging from sharply contemporary to unexpectedly bold and lavish: dramatic modern chandeliers, designer furniture pieces, glowing golden granite and glass bathrooms (only three-fixture in most of the rooms though).
The property seemed good value for a mid-range-turned-upscale brand (happens a lot in India, we find) and quite high F&B standards, especially if you have contemporary and global tastes (especially Asian and American) but also impressive on the Indian specialities, in particular a great selection of innovative Indian vegetarian starters and fruity mocktails. The Kids Eat Free programme continues to make families with young and unpredictable appetites happy.
We had a dekko at the gym and the sauna in the changing rooms by the large outdoor pool, the nifty little gift shop and the 450-person wedding space and flexible meeting arrangements. Oh yes, they also have a special airline crew lounge, with refreshments served on demand.
