Pretty in yellow in Delhi

Bloomrooms in Jangpura is a refreshing change from traditional hospitality

White and yellow, fresh as a newly laid egg — or a just-sprung English daisy — its brightness is hard to ignore in the grey gravel and concrete under the Jangpura flyover. Despite the unassuming signage, Bloomrooms snagged our attention even before we heard of it.

So we went in for a sleepover. And woke up refreshed — they promise you your money back if you don’t — from the fat Cloud Bed™ with the white-tufted spring mattress that the princess of the pea palaver couldn’t have found fault with. Then emerged wide-eyed and fragrant from the Grohe rain shower, supplied with luxurious Gilchrist & Soames amenities (the proprietors are UK-based) and plush towels, for breakfast. Which is served at the cafeteria run by the city-based Amici chain in the annexe. Upstairs from which is a little entertainment room with a TV, small library, couple of computers, bunch of books and board games, and a long table you can eat at should you care to order biryani or butter masala from a local takeaway.

Rooms are ergonomically designed, belying their relatively compact size with the wall-hugging furniture and handy storage niches over bed and desk. Natural light is plentiful. But the most impressive thing about this cheerful, affordable address is the way it defies its ‘budget’/basic price range with the most delightful and thoughtful… well, I’d call them ‘luxuries’ if they weren’t really ‘essentials’ of good hospitality today! Like the free-flowing mineral water fountain and the free bottle for it, or the chilled jug of lemon-flavoured water in the entryway. The free wi-fi, TV and Macs standing about for quick web crawling. The minivan shuttle (bar Sundays) that drops you to the nearest metro station or to Khan Market’s shops and a handy, informative map.

How do they offer so much for so little? By cutting out the unnecessaries. So no room service, bellhops or elevator. No closets; just a single shelf and a couple of hangers. No cribs, complimentary toothbrushes or in-room tea kettles. The breakfast is basic. There is no restaurant; just the outsourced café menu of what most Indians regard as ‘snacks’.

That last paragraph was the hardest part of my entire review — because I missed nothing while in my room. Refreshing, like I told you.
