Ride like a maharaja on Maharaja Express

The Palace on Wheels was once India’s only luxury train, but today there are a host of gorgeous trains on various itineraries chugging around. One of the most lux­urious is the Maharajas Express, which offers five 7N/8D pan-Indian itineraries that cover heritage sites in Maha­rashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Expect palace stays, luxurious spa experiences and dedi­cated guided tours of sites. The train has elegant cabins (including a lavish presidential suite), two restaurants and a lounge bar. The cabins come with plush interiors, private baths and butlers. Itineraries like The Heritage of India begin from $6,840 per person, with the presidential suite pegged at $23,700 per person. The trains run from October to April.
