The 1 Hotel brand now numbers two…properties. This one is in the number one US city for tourists—New York. Just a block down from Central Park. The nature-loving and community-conscious brand has made quite the splash with its ivy-covered façade, echoed by Brooklyn Glass terrariums in the guestrooms. Occupying an old industrial building, the hotel kept its bones—riveted steel beams and concrete ceilings—adding wood, brick, stone and glass from local suppliers, sometimes reclaimed wood and brick too. Fallen twigs gather on the main door, preserved moss in niches down the hallway. The paperless perks plan includes chalkboards, not notepads, by the bed. All faucets have Triple Clear water filters. Linens and amenities are cotton and hemp. Yoga mats and a seasonally inspired goodie bag wait in the room, as does a Nexus tablet preloaded with newspapers and magazines. A Tesla is available for short rides in a 15-block radius. The 24-hour Field House fitness centre includes self-powered machines like Peloton Cycles, resistance treadmills and rowers, kettlebells and weighted exercise balls. Jonathan Wexman’s Jams restaurant is another big draw. Tariffs from $499; www.1hotels.com.
