India is known for myriad types of weaves spread across the country. Some are well known while others are not heard beyond the borders of the state of origin. From the sixth-largest state of the country, Karnataka, comes the intricate embroidery of Kasuti, which has been honoured with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. It is an embodiment of traditions and customs of the people, especially the women, of the state. The Kannada words for hand or Kai, cotton thread or Suti, come together to give the embroidery its name - Kasuti. While the state's sandalwood and bidriware products have always been in the news, the delicate-looking but painstakingly created Kasuti embroidery has been waiting for its time in the limelight.
