The small village of Pranpur in Madhya Pradesh is best known for its weavers. The style of sari that they weave, the Chanderi with its fine silk warp and cotton weft, is rightly considered one of the finest products of Bundelkhand. Where the nearby Chanderi is a bustling town with myriad sari shops, but the town’s ancient history is often forgotten. From its 13th century Jama Masjid to the 15th century Raja-Rani Mahal, Chanderi is a true heritage city. In fact, in a confluence of the region’s famous fabric and its architectural heritage, the Raja-Rani Mahal is today home to looms set up by the NGO Chanderiyaan to train young people from the region in the art of weaving.
