The biggest freshwater lake in Northeast India, Loktak is 45 km outside of Imphal. You can watch the fishermen harvesting water chestnuts on the floating islands called phumdis or take a leisurely boat ride. The Sendra Island Tourist Bungalow (contact Classic Hotel, Imphal for details) offers stunning views of the lake and its rich plant and avian life.

On the southern tip of the lake, 55 km from Imphal, is the Keibul Lamjao National Park (Timings: 9.30 am-5.00 pm). The world’s only floating national park, this is the lone natural habitat of the sangai, or the brow-antlered deer. You will also find a host of migratory birds here between November and March.
