It’s the kind of camera that might make you the cynosure of many a lens. It has been called ‘weird’ and it has been called ‘crazy’. Which already makes us partial to the new HTC RE, which looks like a periscope, lacks any version of viewfinder and has no power button. In fact, it is quite literally a point-and-shoot device, clicking on when you pick it up — in fact, it has just two buttons to control your shots. The idea behind its strange contours is to save you from viewing the world through a screen just because you want to, paradoxically, capture the moment. Ultrawide-angle lens (146°), 16 megapixels, battery enough for 1,200 stills and 100 minutes of video at a time, slow-mo video capability, waterproof enough to shoot underwater for half an hour (aptly for its shape), talks to both Android and iOS — lots to like, we say. You might call it a steep learning curve, but this one, a baby can shoot with.
