It must have been the witching hour in Steinau an der Straße when I ducked into the old royal stables and found — not horses — but a marionette theatre called Die Holzköppe. Meaning “the wooden heads,” this is where three generations of the Magersuppe family honed their craft from 1924, playing Grimm’s fairytales on many a string. While Faust and the Devil contemplated eternal damnation on stage, I found this little puppet witch (€ 3) and stuck her on my finger. Don’t let her wooden features fool you into doubting her malevolence, for she could be one of the three horrible hags toiling over Macbeth’s troubles, or the cleverest witch at Hogwarts, or even Don Henley’s witchy woman, all raven hair and ruby lips. Just waggle your puppet and you’ll find your inner witch.
