I can live without the smell of freshly ground coffee, but I can’t resist flea markets, and succumb even more easily to flea markets that sell interesting mechanical devices. I found this lovely chestnut-coloured coffee grinder (Euro 20) at a flea market in the plaza between terminal I and II of the Munich airport. The coffee beans go in through an opening on top. A few turns of the handle (and the giant corkscrew shaft to which it is attached) and the finely ground powder falls with perfect mechanical efficiency into the tiny drawer below. I love working the machine—and the smell of freshly ground coffee wafting through the apartment every morning is a triumphant reminder of its efficiency.
