Surprisingly, it took South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) 20 matches to eliminate two teams from Copa America 2021 before the knock-outs. Australia and Qatar, who were invited to compete, pulled out due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving ten continental teams. Lionel Messi's Argentina won Group A (South Zone) with 10 points (three wins and a draw), while the tournament's most successful side, Uruguay finished second with seven points (two wins, one draw and one defeat). Paraguay (two wins and two defeats) and Chile (one win, two draws and one defeat) were third and fourth with six and five points each.

Hosts and defending champions Brazil also have 10 points with three wins and a draw to top Group B (North Zone). Peru were second with seven points (two wins, one draw and one defeat). Colombia (one win, one draw and two defeats) are third, ahead of winless Ecuador (three draws and one defeat).
