In the past few years, South Indian cinema has become more than just 'regional cinema'. Films like 'Baahubali', 'RRR', 'Pushpa', 'Kantara' and 'KGF:2' among others have cemented the position of South cinema not only in India but also globally. Like the previous years, the year 2024 will also be one of the most important years for South films in terms of quality content and box-office numbers. It has an interesting line-up of movies in all four industries- Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.
Here is a list of some of the most-anticipated South films of 2024.
Mahesh Babu starrer 'Guntur Kaaram' is one of the most-awaited movies of 2024. Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, the film is releasing in theatres on January 13. It will see Mahesh on the screen after two years. His last was the 2022 film 'Sarkaru Vaari Paata'. 'Guntur Kaaram' drama also stars Sreeleela as the female lead.
One of the magnum opuses of 2024, 'Kalki 2898 AD' starring Prabhas as the lead is directed by Nag Ashwin. It also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone. The first look was launched at San Diego’s Comic Com festival. The release date is yet to be announced. Earlier, it was slated to release in January 2024.
'Pushpa-The Rule' is a sequel to the pan-ndia blockbuster 'Pushpa The Rise'. Allu Arjun will reprise his role in the actioner. Directed by Sukumar, the first part of the film won several awards, including National awards. It also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil in pivotal roles. It is said to be releasing in August 2024.
One of the most-talked-about movies is Ram Charan's 'Game Changer' directed by Shankar. It also has Kiara Advani. The movie is currently under production and the final release date is yet to be announced.
Vijay Deverakonda will be seen in 'Family Star'. The teaser showed Vijay in dual roles. Directed by Parasuram Petla, the movie also has Mrunal Thakur who plays Vijay’s wife. It will release in 2024.
After the 2018 blockbuster 'Goodachari', actor Adivi Sesh returns as Agent 116 in this sequel. 'G2' is helmed by debut director Vinay Kumar, and also stars Banita Sandhu as the leading lady.
Jr NTR's 'Devara' will release in two parts. The posters of Part 1 have been unveiled already. It marks Janhvi Kapoor's debut in the Telugu film industry. Directed by Kortala Siva, the first part of the movie will release on April 5. It also has Saif Ali Khan.
'Ayalaan' starring Sivakarthikeyan is an upcoming Tamil movie scheduled to be released on January 12, 2024. The science fiction is directed by R. Ravikumar.
Thalapathy Vijay's 'The Greatest of All Time's first look poster was dropped recently. Vijay will be seen in a dual role. Vijay's upcoming film with Venkat Prabhu, which is the actor's 68th film is slated for release in the summer of 2024.
This Ajith starrer is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action thriller. It is written and directed by Magizh Thirumeni and is reportedly releasing in May 2024.

Kamal Haasan's film which is directed by Shankar, is also a highly-anticipated flick. The release date has been postponed several Kamal and Shankar have teamed up after a gap of 25 years. It was reported that the film would released on April 12, 2024
Rajinikanth and TJ Gnanavel Raja’s film is special for various reasons. One is it has Amitabh Bachchan and the film will be a reunion for Thalaivar and Big B. It also stars Fahadh Faasil and Rana Daggubati. Reportedly, the makers are keen to release the multi-starrer during the Summer of 2024, maybe in April.
Upendra will star as the lead in 'UI'. He will direct the film. The movie also features Reeshma Nanaiah, Nidhi Subbaiah, Murli Sharma and P Ravishankar.

'Bagheera' starring Srii Murali and 'SSE' fame Rukmini Vasanth is written by Prashanth Neel and directed by Dr Suri. The teaser was released in December and it has garnered more than seven million views on YouTube. It is slated for a mid-2024 release.
This Malayalam film marks the first collaboration between Mohanlal and filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery. It is releasing on screens on January 25.
'Barroz' is an epic fantasy and it will have Malayalam superstar Mohanlal taking the director’s seat for the first time. Written by Jijo Punnoose, the film is about a mythical figure named Barroz, who has been guarding Vasco da Gama’s treasure for over 400 years and will hand over the treasure only to the true successors of Gama. The film is slated to hit the cinemas on March 28.

It is a horror flick, set in the dark ages of Kerala. Mammootty will be seen in a never-seen-before avatar.
