In a powerful show of protest, more than 60 Congress leaders and workers were detained by police while staging a candle march at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. The demonstration, organized by the Mumbai Congress Committee and led by the party's Mumbai unit chief, Varsha Gaikwad, aimed to condemn the Union government's alleged inaction on the heinous violence against women in strife-torn Manipur.
The gathering saw around 300 Congress workers, holding candles and placards, passionately voicing their outrage over the incident in Manipur where two women were subjected to a horrific ordeal - paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a violent mob on May 3.
With slogans raised against the Union government's lack of response to the Manipur incident, the protesters sought justice for the victims and demanded immediate action to address violence against women. However, the peaceful demonstration was interrupted by personnel from Azad Maidan police station, who halted the march and detained the Congress leaders and workers.
