The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the world's most competentinvestigative agency. It has a perfect track record. It has proved every accused nationalleader to be innocent.
The CBI displayed its skill in the recent Jain hawala case. Forty-odd political leaderswere accused of receiving illegal money on the basis of account diaries maintained bybusinessman Surendra Jain. The CBI could have filed a single chargesheet against all theaccused. In that case, the admission to the media of receiving money from Jain by SharadYadav, Rajesh Pilot, Devi Lal and others would have made the diary authentic for each ofthe accused. Instead, the CBI filed separate chargesheets. For each accused, admissions tothe media by other leaders became irrelevant.
The CBI recovered documents from Amir Bhai in 1995 indicating he had passed illegalmoney to Jain. It gave the documents to the Enforcement Directorate. On the basis of thedocuments, the Enforcement Directorate charged Amir Bhai and took him into custody forinterrogation. But the CBI itself did not take Amir Bhai into custody and interrogate himfor corroborative evidence sought by the courts. It allowed the Jain hawala case to bethrown out of court. Wasn't the CBI brilliant?
The judiciary's wisdom matches the CBI's brilliance. President K.R. Narayananrecently compared law courts to casinos. The President's remark was unfair. Gettingjustice is not a game of chance. The judiciary leaves nothing to chance. It is consistent. It has found every single national leader innocent. Once the Supreme Court did find formerminister Satish Sharma guilty. But the court realised its mistake. It overturned its ownjudgement.
The judiciary passed an order to change the rules and alter the functioning of the CBIon the basis of the Jain hawala case. But by its own judgement, the case did not evenexist! Doesn't that show wisdom and caution?
Our media too is very mature. All our great crusading editors shrewdly refrained fromrunning a campaign on the Jain hawala case. Events fully vindicated their judgement.
India's ruling class tirelessly educates the public about the need fortransparency and accountability. Not one of its members is ever found corrupt. No wonderthe world envies this class.
Therefore, it must be the common people of India who are corrupt. They are giving thecountry a very bad name.
For being perfectly just
Impartiality is a must.
Either punish everyone
Or punish none!
