ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024

ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is here and 10 teams have reached the United Arab Emirates to compete for the coveted prize. The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup was originally scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from October 3 to October 20, 2024. However, the event was shifted out of the South Asian nation due to political unrest in the country.

Like the last four editions, 10 teams are participating in the event in 2024 too. These ten teams are: India, Australia, England, Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Scotland. The ten teams have been divided into two groups of five where every team will play the other four teams once. The top two from both groups will qualify for the semifinal. The winner of the two semifinals will then face off in the title contest.

A total of 23 matches will be played during the tournament in Dubai and Sharjah.

Talking about the tournament, ICC began the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2009 and since then eight editions have been completed with the 2024 one being the ninth. Australia have won six titles including the last three. England and West Indies are the only other countries to have won the title. England lifted the trophy in the inaugural edition while West Indies won the title in 2016. India’s best finish was in 2020 when they lost the final to Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Australia are currently the champions of the Women’s T20 World Cup and start as heavy favourites to win the title again. However, other teams too are in the race. India and England too are among the teams tipped to end Australia’s dominance at the tournament. Sides like South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka are also in the fray who could turn out to be the giant-slayers.
